Which is why when charity Friendship Works came to Open, asking us to be involved with an event they’re putting together, we jumped at the chance. Because here’s a charity that gives the one thing that children need. Time. The premise is so simple : volunteers spend an hour or so each week with a vulnerable child, over a long-term period. They act not just as a mentor, an advisor, a supporter but, moreover, they’re a friend.
OK, that’s the serious stuff. We love a bit of razzle- dazzle too, and the fund-raising event on 28th November promises plenty of that. Some of the leading lights from Hollywood and the London stage including Kevin Spacey, Sir Ian McKellen, Damien Lewis, Tim Pigott-Smith, Johnathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins * have pledged their support for this wonderful charity, and are giving up their time to put on a unique, one-off show at the Almeida Theatre.
Each actor will perform their personal choice of theatre, music or poetry on the theme of childhood. We’re giving Open readers first dibs on tickets, at a special offer price.
The night is a must for anyone who loves theatre and delights in the power of performance. After a rather glam cocktail reception, the audience will get up-close to the actors in the intimate setting of the Almeida, and enjoy personal insights into themes they hold dear.
For this one night, we can get up from the sofa, have fun, and help some disadvantaged children have a friend. And in these uncertain times, we all need those.
Do take a look at Kevin talking about friendship on our player, to the right. This is just a little taste of what he’ll be doing on the night!
