Photographer Nick Knight is one of our best and most highly regarded fashion photographers, and his website SHOWstudio, is the online space ( in fact, perhaps, one of the only spaces ) that fully explores the creative process and debunks the mystery around the fashion industry.
This film, the last in the Vice Style and BlackBerry’s Visionaries, is a personal and insightful interview with Nick in which he talks about working with Lady Gaga, the late Alexander McQueen and, moreover, the purpose of fashion both as an art form and as a business.
He also nominates his former assistant and now Fashion Director at SHOWstudio Alexander Fury as a future visionary, explaining that “ The reason I wanted to put him forward for this is because I think a lot of the way fashion is presented is actually very difficult for the public to grasp. What Alex Fury does is to present fashion in a way that is completely engrossing. He is quite amazingly an encyclopedia of fashion history, so he can look at a dress, not only can he describe a dress to you in a way that is interesting and also very witty but he can follow its heritage and see where it comes from.”
The Visionaries series has offered an understanding of how people in a seemingly ephemeral industry came to have unprecedented power to transform the face of fashion whilst leaving a remarkable impact on culture. The groundbreaking fashion players featured in the films – the first two were Gareth Pugh and Diane Pernet - reveal to what extent fashion, art, music and film inform and complement each other: elements which are the essential ingredients in the creative process, and fashion in turn inspires art, film and music.
