Emma recently started writing for Culture Compass, and has already reviewed The Iron Lady and War Horse, interviewed the founders of Dicha jewellery and been along to the Ronnie Wood retrospective. An enthusiastic whirlwind ( we’d love some of her energy ) we managed to grab her for five minutes to get the skinny on her writing inspiration.
What do you love about writing?
Living in a house where everyone constantly thinks they are right, I love the fact that when I am writing no-one talks over me! In the past, I have always thought that the spoken word is persuasive but I am now learning that the written word has all the power….
What’s been your favourite writing assignment so far?
Ridiculous as this might sound, I love every single assignment. Writing makes me feel free and calm, even more so when the assignment is challenging or, at least, out of my comfort zone.
How did you get started?
For as long as I can remember, I have bored everyone I know about my dream of writing. Then, one day, my friend introduced me to George Clooney on the red carpet and I just had to write about it.
Who’s your favourite writer?
I have a few: Wally Lamb, Niccolo Ammaniti, Tatiana de Rosnay, Markus Zusak and Curtis Sittenfeld have all written some of my favourite novels.
What book is on your bedside table?
At the moment, amongst the pile of magazines, there are two books: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein which my kids adore and When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman
Who would you like to interview?
Until recently, Steve Job would have been top of my list. Since his death, Lady Gaga has moved up into first place.
What’s on your Culture Compass right now?
Before the end of the month I would like to have seen A Useful Life at BFI Southbank, eaten at Cut (45 Park Lane) and watched Mildred Pierce on box set.
Tell us a secret….
If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore! But I will just say that I interviewed a very well-known film producer earlier this week and he told me about his new big budget project involving a surprisingly mix of talent….all will be revealed here on Culture Compass of course!
