Spring is definitely in the air, and a fun egg hunt is eggsactly what we need to celebrate, break a record, discover some cracking art and raise money for charity.
Fabergé, the name synonymous with stylish, timeless jewelled eggs have organised the The Big Egg Hunt, which kicks off today. For 40 days and nights – Pancake Day until Easter – London will play host to the world’s biggest ever egg hunt.
Over 200 giant eggs, designed by leading artists, designers, jewellers and architects including Oliver Clegg, Marc Quinn, Mulberry, Theo Fennel, Robinson Pelham, Diane von Furstenberg, Polly Morgan and the Chapman brothers, are nesting in secret locations around central London.
Oliver Clegg says:
“I was really excited to get involved with this charitable project, because as an artist I believe it’s important to keep challenging yourself and work outside of your comfort zone. I am primarily a painter, and dabble in a bit of sculpture, so coming up with a concept for designing an egg was certainly a challenge.
My approach with my design entitled ‘On/Oeuf’ was not to paint, which was something I could easily have done. I wanted to do something conceptual and stray away from the egg-related jokes ( we should probably follow his lead ) I liked the idea of making something that isn’t solid – something that highlights the fragility of an egg, yet also showcasing the numerous layers underneath the shell. I like the transparency of my design also – this, to me, allows a sense of a space for interpretation for the viewer. This way the viewer can entertain their own imagination when looking at my design and this idea of imagination and creativity is mirrored in the lightbulb that appears in the centre of my egg – the ultimate symbol of an idea.”

After this eggciting eggsibition ( and an end to poor egg puns ) the fibreglass creations will be auctioned, with money raised going to fantastic charities Action for Children and Elephant Family.
